I draw the webcomic Manly Guys Doing Manly Things and work on cartoons you might see on TV sometimes.

Aurgh, someone asked me a question about keeping your characters consistant but I was stupid and answered the wrong ask with the wrong response and had to delete it. ANYWAY your best bet is making your characters individual enough that you can tell them apart no matter how your style might change. like as long as Jared is Noodley with a long chin and shaggy brown hair and Commander is boxy with a busted up nose and James Dean hair, it’s easy enough to tell who is who no matter what kinds of inconsistencies there might be between panels.
The Homestuck fandom is probably a great example of that, because in the original comic all the characters are basically the same little doll with different embellishments, so as long as the fanartists maintain things like horn shapes and haircuts, people can tell who the characters are supposed to be no matter how differently individual artists might present them.
