I don’t remember the context for why Squid drew this in a /co/ thread, or that there need to be any. But at least I know why I saved it.
I think it was because I drew that “Preachermon” thing with Ash as Jesse, Misty as Tulip, and Brock as Cassidy, and people started speculating on who the Saint of Killers would be.

I’m disappointed that they always focus on stupid legendaries and religion instead of the SOCIETY FULL OF MAGICAL ANIMALS. Magical animal related mafia shenanigans was a good start, but they went downhill fast.Yes, exactly. It’s not even that bad because the premise of some of the games are good (Colosseum comes to mind), but all of the stories and antagonists and supporting characters just fall flat. The most interesting story was Team Aqua vs Team Magma, but it was just “revive ancient Pokemon to teach the other guy a LESSON!”
The really interesting part of R/S/E was the whole ancient people being forced to seal away the Regis, but that never went anywhere other than ‘Okay now you catch them!’ It’s just so much story potential gone to complete waste :(
I liked Team Rocket and Giovanni’s legitimate-businessman-and-respected-gym-leader side versus his godfather-mobster-king side because it focused on a business (criminal organization… business… whatever) relevant to the idea that this is a society where people and weirdass battle creatures have a symbiotic relationship. Like hey, what is the mafia doing in battle creature world? What technology are people investing in in battle creature world? How do people find research funding in battle creature world? What do people who don’t battle creatures do in battle creature world? Organized crime and animal smuggling and advancement in biotechnology! Interesting issues in magical battle creature world!
I kind of hate most of the newer legendary Pokemon they’ve added, not because I’m some kind of first-gen elitist but because I really have no fucks to give about pokemon religion and the even MAGICALER magical creatures. It’s like they make this potentially super interesting society, and then completely ignore it so they can do another gang wants to AWAKEN THIS ANCIENT DEITY story.
I guess I shouldn’t say I give no fucks about Pokemon religion, I just prefer the ambiguous kind of “this pokemon is strange and rare and we don’t understand it, here is a testament ancient civilizations built in it’s honour” like you get with ruins of Alph or the tower in Lavender town to AWAKEN THIS ANCIENT DEITY. I don’t even mind if there are ancient deities to awaken but it’s on the side and not particularly relevant to the plot, free for you to find in your own tangential exploration, like the Regis.
Team plasma had the potential to be interesting. Animal rights activists in Pokemon land? Shit yeah that’s uneasy ground to cover. but in the end that was just a construction paper front for the most grandiose AWAKEN THIS ANCIENT DEITY story yet.

this is actually canon! clefairy/clefable was intended to be the series mascot until pikachu was unexpectedly popular, and gengar was supposed to be its ~dark shadow~ counterpart
It wasn’t that pikachu was unexpectedly popular so much as they were worried clefairy/clefable would alienate the young male demographic and made the executive decision that pikachu was more unisex.
