Trying to visualize the location, scale, and geography of this island (size is pretty relative, the mainland is supposed to be a comparable size to Ontario). Only a few communities have been marked down, I’ll add more and probably tweak the topography as I work through the story. have been marked It is worth mentioning it’s location and topography is supposed to be a geographic impossibility, which the native residents of the Island believe to be proof that their continent was handcrafted by the gods. They also experience a distinct lack of natural disasters, even when nearby islands or mainland are effected. The native religion of the island teaches that as long as they remain on the continent and preserve its resources, they will be protected from disasters that might effect the rest of the world. As such there is a huge emphasis on environmentalism, renewable resources, sustainable living, population control, and medical science in their culture.
Gaetz and Fathroe are the only two large, industrial, first world cities, and have unparalleled success in medicine, technology, and manufacturing. They operate like city states, supporting the network of suburbs around them. However, much of the country outside of the plains has been deemed “Wild Zone”, electricity and other modern conveniences are almost nonexistent, and local law more or less comes down to morally ambiguous peer agreements. a unanimous fear of being eaten does more to keep people in the wild zone in check than anything else.
Motor vehicles are a bit of a rarity outside of cities, and even then they’re not the preferred form of transportation. Roads of varying quality connect the cities and smaller communities of the plains, as well as many settlements in the wild zone that actively participate in trade and tourism, but other communities can be very difficult to find and travel to. Generally the developed cities and towns of the plains and the anarchistic Wild Zone operate on a sort of “we don’t bother them, they don’t bother us” peace, though people accustomed to the lifestyles who don’t behave like obvious outsiders and offend the locals easily travel back and forth.
Reblogging this from my devblog that I barely ever update because I spent like all night drawing it.
At least saying it’s flat out supposed to be a geologically impossible land formation gives me a free pass to scoot it just about anywhere in the Pacific to keep it away from existing islands.
