I draw the webcomic Manly Guys Doing Manly Things and work on cartoons you might see on TV sometimes.

Ed and Zack are doing another Reddit AMA now that the dust has settled and their movie is out for the world to see! They did one early on when the kickstarter first went up last year, but now you have a chance to probe their brains again, full as they are with all sorts of new knowledge about the journey to creating and distributing a crowdfunded full feature length animated movie!
This is a pretty big deal, a team of 12 animators working on a shoestring budget that their fans handed to them and no advertising just finished an independent feature film that’s currently sitting at the 16th from the top of the iTunes top movies list (if they get to 15th place they make the front page!) If you want to talk to anyone about how to scrap your way to the top, it’s these two!
I think the AMA is slated to go on until around 12:30 Pacific time (September 18th) so ask questions while you can!

Ed and Zack did a kickstarter update breaking down the crew, process, and budget behind Dick Figures (and the hypothetical movie we’ll be making if the Kickstarter gets enough love)

The Dick Figures Kickstarter now has a $50 incentive that gets you DRM free downloads of ALL FOUR SEASONS AND ALL FOUR SOUNDTRACKS OF DICK FIGURES for all of your devices! (On top of the movie, the movie soundtrack, and exclusive behind the scenes footage)

ED and Zack are on Reddit right now (11:25 AM PST) answering questions about all things Dick Figures! (And whatever else you want to pick their brains about)
Real life Hollywood animators at your disposal!

If it was slung over the back of someone’s chair, that was me. We all had to wear flannel shirts for the video because it’s an in-joke with some folks at Titmouse.

catpunchers said: Serious question, why will it take 500k+ to make a full motion picture of stick figures?

Even though the designs are simple, the animation is still held to a high standard, the boards are immaculate, and the series probably has more of a specific style guide regarding design, expression, and motion than anything I’ve worked on. It may sound weird, but, you know, all stick figures were not created equal. It needs to look crude in exactly the right way, or else every animator’s stick figures will look different.

The 500K budget would give you some four months to finish an hour of movie; script, boards, animation, compositing, publishing, the whole shebang with a crew of around 30 people if you expected to break even and didn’t need to worry about rent or utilities on the studio space. Animation, even animation with simple character designs, is expensive. The Stick figure designs are the reason it would be only 500K and not upwards of a million (what the budget for the 70 minute Drawn Together movie Six Point also animated was reported to be)

THIS IS REALLY IMPORTANT, GUYS

The folks following me here on Tumblr may or may not know that I work at Six Point Harness animation studio (the folks behind Nickelodeon’s El Tigre, MTV’s Good Vibes, The Drawn Together movie, and more). And you may or may not know that Six Point is home to Ed Skudder and Zack Keller, creators of the Mondo series, Dick Figures. You probably remember it from posting animated gifs of the characters doing funny things on your tumblrs a lot.

The style of Dick Figures is very much about using simple character designs to allow animation quality you wouldn’t normally be able to pull off with a youtube series budget. The people here work very hard on it, and have really made something to be proud of.

Some fans have expressed interest in a Dick Figures movie, so Ed and Zack have decided to take it to kickstarter. Crowd sourcing the movie like this means that they would be able to make it their way, without having to rely on producers who would turn the process into a matter of committee approval and quite likely turn it into something completely different than the creators envision.

Funding this project would be amazing, it would completely revolutionize the options available for the creators of animated features in this day and age.

The kickstarter is asking for $250,000 for a half-hour special, but if we make it to $700,000, we can produce a full hour and a half feature film. Contributing to this kickstarter, or even just spreading the word along means you are personally supporting the livelihood of every person in our studio.

And I cannot stress how much that means to all of us.
